Well, I've just spent the last two nights up very late reading JUDGMENT DAY, and it's a true winner! There were ten minutes left. I’m not sure if they ended ten minutes earlier on purpose or something was left out, but that’s what the run time was on WWE Network. Judgment Day was one of the best WWE PPVs of 2005. It’s time for WWE Judgment Day featuring a WWF Title match that saw The Rock defending the gold against Triple H in a 60-Minute Iron Man Match with Shawn Michaels as the referee. John Bradshaw Layfield was interviewed backstage by Josh Mathews. Hunter hit Rock with a Pedigree on the chairs. JBL ripped on Cena saying he should focus on his rap career or movie career or even go for the Governor of Minnesota because these people are idiots or something to that effect. Guerrero with a spinebuster onto the announce table, but it wasn’t hard enough to break it. The right man went over since Angle tormented Booker so much that it was the right call to have Booker get the big win. Show with a huge chop to the chest of Carlito followed by a body slam.
Benoit’s left knee had a brace on it. Carlito said he was talking to his good friend Randy Moss, who warned him about Minnesota because the people are not cool. Angle’s music played with Angle making his entrance. Malenko with a spinning slam on Guerrero got a two count as Saturn broke up the pin. JBL had his version of the WWE Title in his hands. Rock went for the floatover DDT, he slipped a bit and then hit a regular DDT for the pinfall at 40:35. Brisco asked if he could just hang out back there with them.
That WrestleMania was an event that saw John Cena win the first of his 16 WWE/World Title when he ended John Bradshaw Layfield’s dominant run as champion. Mysterio shoved Guerrero into the steel ring post three times to break free. This event had a run time of 2 hours, 33 minutes on WWE Network. There was a video package for Big Show vs. Shane McMahon, which showed their split leading to this match. The disqualification ending was frustrating to watch from the perspective of wanting to see a clean ending, but they had two more PPV matches after this, which made the finish seem okay to me.
It was a personal feud that made it easy for the crowd to get into it. Cena with a back body drop followed by a clothesline that sent JBL over the top to the floor. The crowd cheered. London came back with clotheslines followed by a hurricanrana. Analysis: That was a simple way to make the fans happy after the Dudleys were screwed. Guerrero broke the ref’s count and went back out. Benoit went up top and hit a headbutt on Jericho. Analysis: This video did an excellent job of telling the story of this feud. The story of the night was another strong showing by the heel McMahon-Helmsley Faction because Hunter, Shane and DX all won their matches. There's a problem loading this menu right now. Michaels did not look impressed. Shawn Michaels entered first as the referee of the match with the fans giving him a big ovation. Carlito had his bodyguard Matt Morgan, a 7-footer, with him. There are tags in this match as D-Von started with Dogg with a flying back elbow. Cena got out of it by hitting JBL in the head with a microphone and JBL went crashing through a table that happened to be there. Pre-match notes: Cena was the face WWE Champion that was as popular as ever. They did a “Tazz’s Key to Victory” talking about the Cena vs. JBL main event match. Show gave Shane a Gorilla Press Slam over the top rope back into the ring. The Degeneration X group of Road Dogg, X-Pac and Tori made their entrance. Tag Team Tables Match: Degeneration X (Road Dogg & X-Pac) w/Tori vs. That was very unique and it drew a big pop from the crowd as referee Tim White asked if Benoit gave up. Fans chanted “Cena” again. Guerrero worked on London’s ribs with punches followed by an armbar. Hunter hit Rock in the head with the chair on purpose, so Michaels called for the DQ at 43:44. Let’s get to it. JBL managed to get some momentum back with a DDT. What a refreshingly original story! That’s an awesome show too. The Undertaker missed Judgment Day because he took two months off after WrestleMania due to his wife at the time, Sara, giving birth to the couple’s second daughter. Hunter slapped on the sleeper hold. Hunter hit a suplex on the floor. A replay aired of the end of the match showing the chair shot by Eddie on Rey looked brutal. That was the cue for Vince, Shane and Stephanie to walk down to ringside.
In this era, there was almost always pyro to start the broadcast. Jericho with a forearm to the head using the knee brace as a weapon. That was a very physical, violent and bloody brawl that was really exciting to watch. The crowd booed the DX win. This one made that list as did Backlash 2000 three weeks earlier, which I reviewed here and Royal Rumble 2000 in January. Fans chanted “Holly” to encourage Hardcore to make the tag and Haas got the hot tag against Mercury.
The ref didn’t count because Christian was brawling with Scotty in the ring. Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler were the announcers. JR said if you think this issue between the Dudleys and DX is over then you’re wrong, which again told the viewer it’s going to continue. JBL was carrying the old WWE Title in his hands. Sharmell was giving Booker a massage. Mysterio went for a springboard attack, he jumped off the top and Eddie nailed Rey in the face with a steel chair. Pre-match notes: The Rock was the babyface WWF Champion while Triple H was the heel that was the former champion.

The WWE Judgment Day 2005 pay-per-view was the first Smackdown brand PPV following WrestleMania 21. Mysterio hit a 619 around the post to the back of Guerrero. Hunter shoved him, so Shawn shoved back. There wasn’t much of a reaction for him. Sexay did his dancing routine and his pants fell down to show his underwear and Scotty laughed at it. Without giving the plot away, I loved the sci-fi part -- great creativity! Rock whipped Hunter into the ropes and Hunter grabbed an inside cradle for a pinfall at 26:28. Big Show was up next with a lot of cheers for him. After about one minute of stalling, Carlito went back in the ring. The Dudleys set up Tori for a table spot, but Brisco punched Bubba to save Tori. After the match was over, JBL pointed to his head saying he was smart. The crowd was fired up as Mysterio hit a seated senton off the top rope for a two count. Mr David fleshed out the characters enough to either love or hate them. Pre-match notes: DX were the heels and the Dudleys were the face. Gerald Brisco walked into the Officials dressing room where Chad Patton and Jack Doan were seated there. The DX guys tried to leave, so the Dudleys chased after them and brought them back to ringside. Analysis: -* Awful match. Let’s get to it. Undertaker with a Chokeslam to X-Pac and punch to Road Dogg. Saturn kicked Malenko out of the ring. Jericho drove Benoit knee first into the steel steps. Angle tried handcuffing Sharmell to the ropes, but Booker got back in the ring with a punch to the back and a kick to the face. Orlando Jordan made his entrance as the United States Champion. Paul London got a nice pop as the Cruiserweight Champion. Guerrero remained in control with a belly to back suplex on Mysterio and Eddie slapped on the abdominal stretch submission. Rock and Hunter went nose to nose trash talking as the match began with the crowd screaming for them. Analysis: **** A great match like usual from two of the best wrestlers of this era. Spinning heel kick by Mysterio. Jericho and Benoit had a chop fest. Hunter asked Shawn if he was really going to wear those shorts, Shawn said yeah he loves those shorts and Hunter told Shawn he looked like he was smuggling bananas in those shorts. Bubba grabbed X-Pac, who jumped into his arms as if he was going for a hurricanrana that was never going to happen and gave him a Powerbomb through a table. Bubba tagged in, X-Pac decked him with a spin kick to the face and Bubba prevented X-Pac from getting a table. There is plenty of room for a sequel. D-Von attacked Brisco from behind. JR: “The Dudleys just got screwed.” Yep. Analysis: It’s very weird watching this show thinking about how a kid was at ringside for this while ten minutes earlier in the Angle/Booker match you had Angle threatening to rape Sharmell in that storyline. Booker got the momentum going with a flying forearm followed by a suplex for two. Mysterio with an enziguri kick stunned Guerrero and both guys were down for a nine count. Pre-match notes: Angle, Edge and Christian were heels. Guerrero tried a half crab and Mysterio kicked him away. When watching it back a couple of times, I think Angle probably should have been there a half second earlier or maybe Long should have counted slower. Analysis: He had a torn meniscus that needed surgery, so that’s why they did the knee injury angle. Welcome to the WWE Raw Deal review on TJRWrestling. My favorite Iron Man Match in WWE history is probably Angle/Lesnar from Smackdown in September 2003, but this one and Michaels/Hart at WrestleMania 12 are great too. Show did the job, but he was also attacked by four guys in addition to Shane, so he was protected in defeat. They also showed clips of John Cena and JBL for the WWE Title. The trio of Rikishi, Grandmaster Sexay and Scotty 2 Hotty made their entrance to a huge pop. There was a shot of Booker T walking around backstage looking for Kurt Angle. It also focused on Kurt Angle’s very personal feud with Booker T with Angle saying he wanted Booker’s wife Sharmell. He was very consistent. Scotty tagged in with a double team head whip into the mat followed by a double elbow drop. ... More in Web Series.
